Jazz Assembly

April was Jazz Appreciation Month! To help GCCS celebrate, the PARP Committee invited Mr. Dylan Canterbury to speak to our UPK-6 about jazz music. Mr. Canterbury is a jazz trumpet player, professor at Suny Schenectady Community College & The College of Saint Rose, and composer. He read the book, Oscar Lives Next Door: A Story Inspired by Oscar Peterson’s Childhood, by Bonnie Farmer, illustrated by Marie LaFrance. Afterward, Mr. Canterbury played some jazz music on his trumpet and wowed the crowd! He talked about improvisation and demonstrated how to take a song and put your own spin on it. The students loved listening to all the different sounds that can be made with the trumpet. Thank you, Mr. Canterbury, for teaching us about the wonderful art form of jazz!
